Bats are cool

Bats are the only true flying mammals. There are over 1,400 species of bats, and they can be found on nearly every part of the planet. Not only are they cute, they are also important...

Studying how bats use echolocation has helped scientists develop navigational aids for the blind. Without bats’ pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control we wouldn’t have bananas, avocados, mangoes, agave, or cacao… that’s right, bats bring us tequila and chocolate!

Our community's mascot is Baxter. Baxter is an Egyptian fruit bat that was cruelly kept alone and confined to a small cage for 12 years before being rescued by a bat sanctuary. You can read the full story by clicking on his name.

I had to click through to the article before I realized this was a face fungus and not due to ambient background sound levels... so that's nice.

Here's the how to help page (which it also took me too long to find. damn, brain is foggy.): https://www.whitenosesyndrome.org/static-page/how-you-can-help

Poor bats. This sucks. :(

I put out a bat box 4 years ago and it has never been used.

I watched the video on how to make a bat box and I really wonder if any bats would move in to one on my property in the middle of a major city. I suspect they would not, but I don't know how to know.

Maybe the middle of a major city is exactly where a bat would need a box!

You son of a bitch! I'm in!

Take my money!

Seriously, I think I might try to build one. Looks pretty easy.

I once encountered a population of bats hanging out under a footbridge in the heart of Tokyo, so it's a possibility.

Oh my, is that a pacifier in its mouth? That's actually adorable.
