a while ago I bought a bunch of WD external drives. 4Tb, SMR. I know they're not recommended but it was cheap.

I'm using them to store games archived in 7z. I filled them all up about a year ago.

today I figured I'd compress some leftover zip files but one of the drives was slow, too slow, even for SMR (compared to the other drives) I also noticed this drive is always at 100% activity as per HD Sentinel

I did extended self and write/read tests before filling them up and they all passed.

edit

HD Sentinel is giving me bad reads? I tried HWMonitor and the disk is idle at 0% usage. but unlike the other disks, when I copy a file, it peaks at 3mb/s while the others stay between 3-40mb/s.
