Hi, Datahoards. Long time lurker first time posted.

As the title states I have an HDD that keeps connecting and disconnecting.

The trouble started two days ago when an HDD hooked up to my USB drive dock (Sabrent) just up and died on me and I smelled smoke coming from the power port of it as it died while trying to make a backup of new data to it.

One failed replacement dock that was DOA later and get another one that works and when I try to connect to it the drive keeps connecting and disconnecting repeatedly to the point where sometimes I can see the drive show up and then just blip out of existence.

Before anyone asks, I have three drives so this one being beyond recovery is more of an annoyance rather than a tragedy (and I know it’s the drive, not the new dock because the other two remaining drives work just fine). I just wanted to know if there’s something I could possibly do to attempt to make the drive workable again or if I should just destroy it and try to get a new one ASAP to replace the non functional third one.

In case it is of any consequence, my system is Windows 10 and I use an MSI GP66 Leopard laptop.

EDIT: I'm a little stretched at the moment so I'm getting a replacement drive that's factory refurbished. Though I'd still like to know if making this one operational is possible.
