True doesn't want hear about all the doom and gloom in the world. Especially when he can't beat someone over it.

Thinking this isn’t as much about gloom and doom as he doesn’t want his wife scared to death about her own kids.

Didn’t they have small pox vaccinations in 1907?

Googling around, it looks like the smallpox vaccine wasn't administered until the kid was 1.
