It seems much harder to lookup options for rack based hardware… or at least I am having trouble.

I am not even sure what the terms/technology that I may be wanting…

Here is what I am trying to aim for:

  • rackmount
  • storage capability - let’s say 2-4 hdd (3.5), 2 ssd (2.5)
  • probably room for a reasonably powerful gpu
  • room for dual 10g sfp+
  • standard motherboard/power? ATX likely?
  • at least 2 nvme/m2 on motherboard (I assume I can just pick any ATX motherboard but what should I be careful of in a rackmount case?)
  • latest gen usb3 port externally (perhaps motherboard would have this covered?)

… now for some conflicting ideas…

Should I be looking to have storage by itself? Are there ways I can connect multiple computers to share a mass storage device that isn’t nas? What are SAS controllers? ISCSI? I assume there are faster options than USB or network?

I really have no idea what exists to weigh options.

Thanks
