TL;DR

  • The Moto Tag is now on sale directly through Motorola.
  • Individual units will run you $29, while a four-pack is $99.
  • The new Moto Tag is backward compatible with Air Tag accessories and even supports UWB.

the Moto Tag’s design makes it fully compatible with the majority of Air Tag accessories.

Ugh that means you're forced to buy a keychain for your keys finder as they didn't want to include a hole "because it doesn't fit the design language"

OEMs always copying the worst part of Apple products

I want a open network that is privacy preserving

[–] keyez@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So the new google findmydevice network?

Have you read the posts and technical information about the new network? It's about as anonymous as you're going to get without a network of only like a dozen people.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 year ago

It is a closed source product by a advertising company. Google already collects a huge amount of data so using Google services framework isn't private and it is all closed source so it isn't open. Let me know when it works on AOSP.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Should be private if it works the way they say it does.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 year ago

Except you need the full GSF which isn't private

[–] Virkkunen@fedia.io 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Doesn't it depend entirely on FMD network? If so, then it shouldn't work better or worse than the other options since they all use the same restricted Google network

[–] Neon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It can use UWB, that makes it better.

[–] Virkkunen@fedia.io 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Well but that still depends on Google adding that functionality, which can be anytime between now and never

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Oh their waiting for Apple /s

[–] Neon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Is that really a seperate, locked down api?

I thought any App with Bluetooth permission could access it.

[–] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What’s the battery life?

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

moto tag boasts a one-year battery life4 with everyday use. Easy to replace batteries sold separately.

That's Motorola official https://www.motorola.com/us/moto-tag/p?skuId=1167

If they have replaceable batteries they're already beating tile

[–] tenchiken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago

My tiles all are replaceable batteries... It's model specific but available.

That said I'm getting these as soon as availability is better and hopefully uwb turns on.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

About a year. It runs on a CR 2032, same as Air Tag.

[–] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

And what's the network like? Are there many devices out there reporting the position of those tags? Or is it just Motorola devices with their 5% market share?

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 10 points 1 year ago (3 children)

It runs on Google's Find My device network. All android smartphones which support the latest location reporting are supported. Though, how it works in practice can be different.

[–] GluWu@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

How do I check if I have the latest location reporting support? And then turn it off?

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Launch the Find My Device app. Click your avatar and click find my device settings. You should network options and the granularity with to enable or disable the option.

[–] GluWu@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I do not have that app. I thought it was baked into google services which I haven't 100% gotten rid of, still on OEM and not lineage or graphene.

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago

Search the settings. Or install from play store for a convinient shortcut.

[–] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I thought that wasn't launched yet? Do they backport and enable that per default to compete with the mass of iPhones, or is it going to be a rare occurence that a tracker gets reported?

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have a pebblebee, which uses the FMD network.

It's pretty obvious that the network isn't as robust as Apple's. I expect it'll improve.

[–] keyez@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hopefully but probably not as it seems everyone online wants to disable or turn off the initial minimal setting.

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I know that's the general sentiment for online discourse. I think it amounts to a rounding error in terms of total population. I'm confident it'll improve. Maybe never be better than airtags... But I expect better than now.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Good luck. Don’t think it we’ll ever be better unless Google changes the default.

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It should be compatible on most android smartphones running the latest version of play services. The default should work for lost smartphones and items in high traffic areas. So, tracking in low density areas may be spotty.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Oh so useless. Since Googles find my is useless.

[–] Moonrise2473@feddit.it 4 points 1 year ago

Theoretically good as it could use any android device with Google services installed - in practice not as good as airtags as Google made it opt-in and nobody ever changes default settings

[–] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I was listening to a podcast about a dad who puts air tags in his kids shoes when they go on vacation. And I love the idea.

But I'm extra concerned about privacy and life span. Is this one of those situations where it's like house cams where everything is transmitting to a foreign nation/government anyways just accept that for convenience?

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

That's nice. I already got some Chipolo on account of them being made in the EU. Being with AirTag accessories is a nice pro to this alternative.
