Yeah, that's just the stance you take when shooting from a standing position in competition. It's really awkward at first, but it does improve the stability of your aim significantly.

Well, the others are using pistols, while he's using a rifle.

They do, which is really more of a comment on society and how the fact that they appear "disabled" (eye patch) makes them appear villainous.
I want more hot eye patches on protagonists dammit! De-villanify disabilities!
