He will start from Zandvoort it sounds like

I'm surprised that there aren't straight disqualifications for more than some number of grid places in terms fo penalties. Why not just straight up do a race ban?

That's needlessly harsh for teams that have an unreliable PU. That's why the penalty actually goes down for the second component over budget (5 spots for the ICE instead of 10).

Why? Whatโ€™s the incentive to do that? Thatโ€™s how you get a sport where the teams besides managing their tires will baby their engines even more. It will just increase the gap between the top teams and bottom teams. It would make the sport boring to watch, and halfway the season multiple cars will be missing from the grid.

Great point. I actually hadn't thought of that.

So one logical reason they even bother calling placements is because if both yuki and Max took replacements and upgrades that both would drop them to the back, who would really be at the back?

On a different point, a bad PU maker can't even be replaced until 2026. They're locked into their makers by the FIA until then. So they can't really change off redbull to say Ferrari until after next season.

Imo let him start from the back, no big deal. We'll get a good comparison of how well yuki in the vcarb can get through the field, if at all, compared to perez who will probably put himself out in q1 and attempt yet another recovery drive.

Fun for all

Is he obligated to make a qualification session? He will start last no matter what he does, right?

Yep. As always when driver have these kind of penalties they do a couple of laps in Q1 to set a time. Get knocked out in Q1.

Gasly had a grid penalty at Silverstone, he just put up a representative time in Q1 and then just sat in the pits.

107% rule still applies
