Hello,

Looking for some advice from seasoned experts.

Here is setup:

  • 2023 MacOs M2 Mac Mini (Please forgive me)
  • Orico 5-Bay Hard Drive Docking 6558US3-C
  • Drive 1 - Seagate Iron Wolf 8TB ST8000VNZ04 - 2 Months in use - no issues until today
  • *New* - Drive 2 - Seagate Barracuda 8TB ST8000DMZ04 - 24 Hours in possession

After moving data from Drive 1 to Drive 2 (took 12 hours) and having no issues, I moved a small file and then checked on it 5 mins later, both drives had disconnected.

Same thing happened again this afternoon and evening, both after logging in from sleep. Never had had an issue with drive disconnecting until second drive was attached.

Upon suggestion from another thread, downloaded DriveDX. Has health of second drive as Poor, but short test returned no warnings. Seek Error Rate at 35%. Power Cycle 3 Times in 24 Hours

Health of First Drive is great. Power Cycle 6 times in 2 months (believe 3 of those are from Drive 2, but may be misreading this)

Currently moving data back to Drive 1 and then will return Drive.

Questions:

  1. Could this be an Orico Bay issue, now that two drives are attached. Could they each be getting asked for data and are disconnecting?
  2. Could this be a MacOs issue driven by going to sleep? Would be odd as has not happened for last 2 months. I did set setting (today) to not turn hard drives off when sleeping, but again not sure why it would suddenly be an issue and haven't had an issue since, but haven't let it go to sleep.
  3. Is this just a poor drive?
