Hello everyone I hate to bother anyone but I am really out of my element here and could use some tips to see if I am headed in the right direction.
For some context I was gifted 5x10TB drives and was so happy and excited to create a media server box for my house until I saw that they were 12gbs SAS and seem to require more work and know-how to set up.
So far, from what I was able to look up both on this sub and elsewhere, all I would need is a junker PC with enough space to fit 5 drives and a SAS compatible HBA card.
I have three questions:
- Is it true that all the hardware I need is a pc that can fit an hba card (and the card itself) to utilize SAS on a desktop PC?
- What is the cheapest viable HBA card for my build? I was looking at this LSI clone https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BY8TF8YJ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A1XC5IBX3KGXP5&psc=1 but I suspect I should pay extra for something that's better. (note: I know this one says 6gb but I don't care that much if it bottlenecks. As long as it is compatible with my drives 6gb/s is enough for my purposes)
- Is there a cheaper/simpler way to make an enclosure for 5 SAS drives? (minimal size also preferred)
