I currently have a 2018 Mac Pro with 1TB of storage, however it is my dads old computer and he has ~750GB taken up. I am looking at external drives for storage. I really have no idea if I should get a HDD or SSD. Probably looking at 2Tb or 4TB. Most of the stuff being stored would be, movies, large datasets, photos and textbooks. The photos and textbooks would not get read a lot. I don’t think I would be doing anything that requires editing straight on the drive. I would most likely copy to my computer and edit on there if I need to. There will be times where I probably won’t access it for a month at a time. I do have a 1TB ssd right now but that is filling up.

From the research I’ve done I have a few options, I would like to spend less than $100

Stand alone ssd - expensive for 2TB or more

HDD - I didn’t look that hard but seagate ones are ~60 for 2TB. Are there better options?

Internal SSD with a casing - is this the best option. Could get a used ssd and case, total seems like ~100

I really have no idea what to look for and what would be best.

If I do want to browse images and photos on a hdd drive, is it slow?
