Everett being based on an historical level.

Everett being woke as fuck too. Can you imagine the reich-wing rage nowadays if a newspaper ran a comic where a bigot gets punched in the face?

"Hey now, why is Captain America beating up Nazis? That's a little biased!"

I'd never heard of these comics until this community was made. Thanks for sharing.

The author of this strip had seriously bi-polar swings between good and evil. This dude can be both misogynistic and yet defend women. He can be racist and yet anti-racist. I don't really understand.

There's something for everyone. Not very different from the bible.

Better than the Bible, I'd argue.

I thought so too, but the comics stopped being produced in '27, so I'm not sure that's right.

There's a bunch more with that date here. Maybe he did some more of them later on?

Maybe it was a special collaboration project (with Antifa?).

I wonder if it's even real. None of the other images when searching Google has any sort of similar date.

You mean the dates are wrong? That's probably on me for fetching the comics from Twitter lol. Feel free to correct anytime.

*I think I read that wrong lol my brain isn't englishing right now. carry on

Turns out that

  • August Derleth (of Cthulhu fame) tracked down Condo in his retirement, according to The Capital Times of Madison, Wisconsin on Nov 28, 1948 Page 4 - see image below.
  • A Capital Times article on Wed, Jan 17, 1951 Page 12 says that Derleth planned to publish a collection of old and new comics.
  • Finally, The Wisconsin Historical Archives has "4 oversize folders" of "Pen and ink drawings, 1948-1949, 1953-1954, by cartoonist A.D. (Armundo Dreisbach) Condo, featuring the character Everett True." (but... I imagine you have to actually go to Wisconsin and convince them to let you see them...)

This outburst is inconsistent with the other extremely racist outbursts from this same series.

I wonder if this was the artist coming back and rectifying some of the more problematic comics?
