I need help with my Synology 918+ 4-bay NAS, and I hope the Reddit community can provide some guidance.
Over the years, I’ve been upgrading my NAS drives one by one for more space. As of April 2024, I had four WD white label NAS drives (shucked from Easystore shells). In April, Drive #2 (14TB) crashed. I powered down the system but didn’t have the funds for a replacement right away, so I waited. On Prime Day, I bought a 16TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro to replace the crashed drive.
I installed the new 16TB drive and did a quick rebuild to get it online fast since my storage volume only has 1-drive fault protection. The rebuild seemed successful, so I continued with my day. However, later that evening, the volume crashed again. This time, both the new Drive #2 (Seagate 16TB) and Drive #4 crashed. The volume became read-only, and I started backing up what I could until the copying process stopped altogether.
I’ve been searching for solutions online, but the information I’ve found is confusing and mostly addresses issues with just one crashed drive. Should I consider involving a data recovery service at this point? I’m cautious about making things worse. I have also opened a ticket with Synology.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
