Hi everyone,

I am in the process of trying to sort my data out and get organised. I was thinking of building a combined NAS/Plex server but I don't have the $$$ for that right now (I will build Intel 12th gen next year). However I need some advice on HDD's that i'm getting now as a 'stage 1' before building server next year.

Now - Stage 1

  • get a 2TB WD Blue for personal docs/photos
    • back up to Ext HDD
    • back up to cloud (still looking for provider, any recommendations?)
  • get a 4TB or 8TB for Plex media
    • run plex from main pc
    • back up to cloud if i can find a provider that allows me enough space

I don't know whether to get WD Blue for Plex Media or WD Red Plus - I have read that WD Red Plus doesn't like running as a single drive? and should only be in a RAID? That is why I am thinking Blue - but if Red can run as a single drive then it's 1 less drive to buy down the line for the NAS/Media server?

Help! lol....my brain feels like its about to explode with opinions on HDD's !

Also down the line do I really need to run RAID or can I just use a simple 'backup' software to another drive (like windows mirror backup?) I'm just getting my head around this bit.

Thank you!
