Please excuse me, for I am dumb.

I'm also fairly certain I know what the anwser to this is, but I have anxiety and not knowing 100% for sure has been like a pebble I can't get out of my shoe.

JPG compresses and TIFF is lossless.

What does JPG being compressed... mean?

If I copy a backed up photo and paste it somewhere else, does that damage the new JPG?

If I open the backup photo, edit it, and save a copy, does that damage the original JPG? (I don't know why it would, but as I already said, I'm dumb and anxious.)

But the copy is a lower quality than the original?

If I'm going to have a digital photo album, that I'm only going to look at and not edit, do I need to convert my JPGs to TIFFs for 'long term storage'?
