hello - i've had an issue with my OWC Thunderbay Flex 8 (running Raid 4, previously Raid 5) and need help. Constantly on computer restart (Mac OSX Sonoma, Mac Studio Pro, 64GB ram) Softraid (v8) would alert me that a drive is missing. I've done full rebuilds of the raid array from scratch with full tests/verifying the hard drives. OWC support has confirmed that no one drive is faulty. When i had RAID 5 it would always rebuild itself successfully. Support told me to change to RAID 4, now its not rebuilding itself, says one drive is missing, and i'm scared to restart as i worry a 2nd drive will 'go missing.'
my drives are a mix of WD 10TB Red Plus NAS 5400 WD101EFAX and WD101EFBX WD Red Plus NAS 7200. I realize this may be the issue, but OWC support hasnt mentioned that, and i've had about 5 open cases going back 2 years, when i first had this issue.
here is the lackluster response i'm getting from OWC, when they told me its 'probably' due to the drives using intellipower, and i asked them where is the documentation that says i shouldnt have bought these drives. I was hoping the lack of clarity on which drives to buy at time of purchase might entitle me to some sort of refund at this late stage.
"Asking where this is stated in the documentation is a bit like asking where in the documentation it says not to combine 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM drives or not to combine SSDs with HDDs; it isn't there because it's basic knowledge. "
They are blaming intellipower - but no where is it listed these drives use those sort of power saving features. i have a call out to WD. Anyway - my question - what is the best course of action that might get this fixed with the least amount of money. I am a film and tv editor struggling with lack of work due to the strike and other hollywood issues - i need this array to work but am not getting much work. Should i fight OWC further? or should i buy all new drives? Can i just buy some drives? do i have any case with OWC refunding anything?
