Usually, I need at least one of the hints. Otherwise, "e" tends to be the most frequent letter and it's often at the end of words. Two letter words can be helpful as well because there are not that many of them and all contain one vowel and one consonant. In general, correctly identifying the vowels is the most important task. There's also this guide.
