Why hasn’t the vestigial bed shrunk to save energy for the organism? So rarely are they actually used.

Perhaps it’s important for sexual dimorphism?

If it's sexual dimorphism, it sure seems like an unnecessary appendage. Could its purpose be to distract from the shrunken genitalia?
