Hello! I looked for an answer already but found very different, or even outdated responses.

I have a homemade NAS server running on Ubuntu server 22.04. I have SSD as my boot drive, and 2 8TB drives configured in RAID 1 with the built-in disk management tool, whatever it's called (so software RAID).

My disks are getting full, so I bought 2 16TB drives to replace my old drives. My question is, how do I proceed to increase the capacity of my array?

From what I have read online:

  • I could build another RAID 1 array with the new disks, and then copy the data from the old array to the new one. However, I don't have anymore SATA ports available. I do however have a Windows PC with free SATA ports, so maybe I could mount 1 of the array on this machine, but I am not sure I can just plug my disks on different machines with different OS.
  • I could also backup my data to another disk (which I don't have) or online (with my crappy upload speed it would take ages), and build a new array from scratch with the new 16TB disks, then copy/download the data to my new, bigger array. If possible, I would like to avoid doing that, as that is a lot of downtime.
  • Is there a third option I have not seen or thought about?

Thank you for your help.
