Futurama is a unique entry in the science-fiction genre for a lot of reasons. Its flexibility in terms of tone and content has always allowed it to be impressive and silly at the same time. Even as the series pokes fun at the tropes and conventions of the genre, Futurama has explored sci-fi through exciting action, compelling romance and deep philosophy. One of the unique elements of the series is the ship at the center of its story, which stands out above any other major vessel in the genre.

I assume you are only making this claim for TV and Movie SF as there are many print SF stories where this is much more the case than Futurama. The ship, like ST, is a thing that is used. It is not a character itself, it has no goal or motivations or self awareness or agency.

You are forgetting that Bender and The Ship had a romantic yet toxic relationship. The Ship is definitely a character.

Bender does what bender wants. He is in control and has agency.

The ship is self aware but has no control. IIRC: When it tries to exert agency, the crew have to stop it. If the ship is sentient, it is a slave.

The ship, like ST, is a thing that is used.

That was my distinction.

It can withstand atmospheres somewhere between zero and one!
