I remember reading in one of John Timpson's books about this. Apparently it was the church cat, and the verger had them buried in the churchyard. People complained, but his argument was that it'd spent more time in church than anyone!

It was exceptionally old for the time.

The average lifespan of domestic cats has increased in recent decades. It has risen from seven years in the 1980s, to nine years in 1995, to about 15 years in 2021.

Huh, even when I was a kid the number I heard was 15-18, and that more or less matched my own and my friends' cats.
