I'm looking for a secure and private way to store about 1-3TB of photos and 500-1000GB of documents. I want something reliable and not too complicated to set up. Here are my options and concerns:

Background

  • Moving Away from Google and Microsoft: I want to move away from their ecosystems for better security and privacy.
  • Security and Privacy: These are top priorities for me.

Cloud Storage

  • ProtonDrive: Buggy on Mac (wife) and Windows/Android (me), expensive, and slow.
  • Mega: Bad reviews and trust issues. Based in New Zealand.
  • Sync.com: Hate the UI. Just hate it a lot.
  • Filen: New service, questionable longevity, and not the best UI. Slow.
  • pCloud: Skeptical about popularity; only one vault is zero-knowledge encryption and costs extra.

NAS

  • Considered Models: Synology DS224+ with two 6TB drives.
  • Concerns: High costs (around £1,200), not very tech-savvy, and looking for a set-it-and-forget-it solution.
  • Worries: What if the NAS hard drives fail? What if there's a power outage while I'm away?

Hesitations:

  • Cloud storage feels like "someone else's hard drive."
  • NAS seems expensive and potentially complicated to manage.

Looking for:

  • Advice on cost-effective, secure storage solutions.
  • Easy setup and maintenance.
  • Personal experiences or recommendations.
  • Solutions for NAS reliability and power outage concerns.

Thanks for your help!
