Hello my fellow data hoarders,
Still a beginner hoarder here, but I began my quest motivated and determined to put some order my chaotic 30+ hdds/SSDs acquired in the last 15 years.
I recently used Czkawka on 3 external drives (1 WD Mybook 14 TB; 1 WD Elements Desktop hard drive 20 TB, 1 Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD 2 TB), to look for duplicates.
The Sandisk was connected (USB-A) to a Lenovo 40AF0135EU hub, itself connected to the computer (USB-C); the 2 WD were connected (USB-A) to a caldigit hub, connected (USB-C) to the Lenovo 40AF0135EU hub, itself connected to the computer (USB-C).
It took more than 2 days and a half to scan everything, with a fairly recent laptop (HP OMEN 17-cb1011nb).
So I wondered about several things:
- First of all, would you know if there are Windows settings I can change to speed up the indexing/scanning process? Regarding cable management, are there things I should change regarding how I plug the drives? For example, should I connect them all to the caldigit hub?
- Second of all, if I were to change laptops/PC, are there computer specs that would allow me to speed up the indexing/scanning process?
- Third of all, if my main focus is the ability to quickly index/scan files, what kind of HDD/SSD specs should I look for? Highest reading/writing speeds and that's it?
- Finally, what software would you recommend, and why ? In the past, I used to use Alldup, but I wanted to have a look at Czkawka. However, I don't really know which is the best. I plan on doing the same task with Alldup to compare the processing speed of both software.
