Hi.

I'm wanting to build a NAS/server to serve media. I plan to run Jellyfin or Plex on the device. I like to think eventually 20TB of storage space would be good. It would be nice to be able to run docker with a few other things on it as well, e.g. pihole.

Requirements:

  • Low power usage
  • ~20TB Storage, less is fine for the time being
  • Quiet

I'm thinking of buying one of:

TerraMaster F4-434 - N95

Synology DS923+ Ryzen R1600 Dual Core

The reason I haven't so far is because I'm torn. I really don't want to run their custom OSs. While I've heard I can install my own OS on a QNAP, that kind of sounds like a shit show waiting to happen.

I am leaning towards buying a mini PC with a detectable HDD bay.

Trigkey N100 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD. https://www.amazon.com.au/Alder-Lake-N100-TRIGKEY-G4-Computer/dp/B0CLL1JT4V/

and then buying this to go with it. DAS - QNAP TR-004 4 Bad Enclosure USB 3 with built in RAID:

On the mini PC I'd probably run a headless Ubuntu.

This is probably not the way to go right?

Anything you'd advise?
