I want to replace a bunch of hard drives that are part of my 3-2-1 backup strategy with a single Synology NAS.
But I want to keep the NAS powered off when not backing up as a means of preventing ransomware infections. I also have no desire to run other stuff on the NAS, or make files available remotely; I just want a single device that can sync select folders on my PC and run drive diagnostics when I turn it on.
The reason why I want a Synology is because it seems to have the most robust software for NAS, and because of RAID1 (in before “RAID is not a backup.” I am aware of that). I like the idea of minimizing downtime in case for some freak reason, one of my backups got corrupted when I need it.
Is there a better tool suited for what I want? Or would I be just fine with a Synology?
