How do you come back from genocide, handing over children (at minimum) 22 children rapists, kidnapping over ten thousand kids, and murdering 500 in your care? All of which took 56 pages to even document to any extent.

Apology doesn't seem to quite cut it.

Tbh that the Catholic Church didn't immediately apologize is why you know the whole thing needs to burned to the ground.

Asking for forgiveness is literally their whole thing, if they don't it's because they didn't think they had anything to apologize for.

"Church's role in harming kids..."

That's a funny way to spell "church officials raping kids..."

Editorial watering down like this is disgusting. Even if it wasn't intentional, if you as the reporter aren't comfortable calling sexual abuse rape in a headline and have to water it down to "harm," that's another reason to keep it full-strength. If it makes people mad, good. The truth should make people mad in cases like this.

I think the issue is more so that the harm wasn’t solely sexual. They fucked up the kids in a lot of ways.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

You're right, "rape" or "fucks up kids in innumerable ways" is good.

Good for them for apologizing. Now what? Because that's not even remotely enough.

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

Now they sell everything they have and give it all to the poor, as Jesus commanded them.

Any day now.

Amazing how these criminals think shit like this can be done away with an apology lol

But looking at how they got away with shit, maybe we are the idiots at the poker table.

I know it's a platitude, and so does everyone else, but it's important when you think about what it means when there is no apology or acknowledgement of harm done.

It's a good first step, that hopefully leads to more, but at least stops gaslighting everyone's reality.

In a sain world calling yourself a Christian would be taboo. Sadly many indigenous people are brainwashed to believe in their white savior.

[–] xenomor@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

As penance, I suggest that the church dismantle itself, distribute its wealth, go away and do something actually productive, and don’t come back.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Good, now give them money.

[–] rab@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In Canada we throw lots of money at them and it doesn't really solve anything either unfortunately

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

If money isn't solving it, you're clearly not throwing enough at it.

We gave the kamloops band 11 million 3 years ago to investigate the mass graves and the tribe leader seems to have stolen 8m of it and progress hasn't even started

Like our government, they are rampant with corruption too and that is what is preventing progress

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nobody said zero oversight was the right method.

[–] rab@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well throwing money isn't the right method, that's what we do now

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

11 million is government pocket change. You gave them basically scraps and expected results.

[–] rab@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Regardless they stole the money as it usually goes

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Sounds like lack of oversight is being used as an excuse to withdraw future funding.

[–] aphlamingphoenix@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Embarrassingly late, as usual.

[–] Phegan@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

What is their penance?
