Wasn't he the King of Macedon? Like wasn't that the original/first title he had before he started doing his conquests?

I think this is technically true, but mostly irrelevant. Sparta got pretty thoroughly trounced by one of Alexander's generals while the man himself was out campaigning in Asia, and were effectively subjugated anyway.
