General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Mr Farage also spoke with shoppers and while standing by a market stall selling eggs, joked that after being covered in a milkshake last week he did not want eggs to be the next thing thrown at him.

Someone ready the eggs

[–] breadsmasher@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

freeze the egg first and pelt it as hard as possible

[–] teft@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Rotten ones would be better. It’s damn hard to get that smell out.

[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 9 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Having been hit in the eye with a frozen egg, I can't condone this as it's like throwing a rock at someone and it really hurts. An unfrozen one is safer and far messier, which makes it funnier.

Oh no, you mean he could get injured? God that is so sad 🥺

"I will not be bullied or cowed by a violent left-wing mob who hate our country," he wrote about the incident.

Assumes that:

  • He is The Country
  • Only left wingers hate him
[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 year ago

If there really was a "left wing mob" out to get him, I think he would be getting attacked with more than one food item every other day.

He loves this. He loves to play the victim. The underdog. Despite being a being a real life racist rich toff caricature.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If what he loves is a hurled brick, he's welcome to as many as he'd like.

Frankly I have no patience for 'that's just want they want!' as a kneejerk response to any backlash against diet Nazis. They'll claim victory no matter what happens. That's part of what makes the fascists. The nature of bad faith is that there is no right answer.

If this pattern means the only headlines about this asshole go 'asshole hit by [object]' - great. Beats reporting any of the garbage flying from his face.

I think we need to keep being better than them. Not get dragged into the mud with them.

[–] Kangie@lemmy.srcfiles.zip 3 points 1 year ago

Really? I think you should punch Nazis in the fucking face.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

How'd we solve the previous round of Nazis? Polite patience and understanding?

Identifying when people threaten everyone you love and telling them to fuck right off is being better than them.

[–] jabjoe@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not saying we tolerant intolerance. Just not we shouldn't be first to violence. Milkshakes fine, rocks, not fine. Mock them don't hit them.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

What do you think intolerance of intolerance entails?

... is a milkshake to the face not "hitting them?"

[–] jabjoe@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If it's just to make them look silly and not liked, but not actually hurt.

If someone stabbed Farage, he'd make such hay of it. I'd half expect him to have arranged it! Wouldn't surprise me if he arranged the odd milkshake too, to keep him in the news.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Oh no, making hay. That totally cancels out getting stabbed.

Sick to death of this nothing-works attitude. Yeah - there is no course of action that fascists won't claim proves them right. Stop listening to fascist claims. They lie. They're fascists. That's their schtick. But in the same way as deplatformed cranks shouting 'I was cancelled!' to an empty room, and spanked children insisting 'that didn't hurt!,' sometimes you can ignore the words coming out of their stupid mouths.

[–] jabjoe@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We don't have to give them a platform. Not quite the same as deplatforming. Farage is given way to much platform for the votes he gets.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not quite the same as deplatforming.

Incorrect.

[–] jabjoe@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is it "de" if you don't have it the first place?

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Yes. Exclusion is part of it, as surely as preventing the same asshole from starting another account on the same service. Why would you wait and see if someone booted for being a fascist is still gonna be a fascist if given a shiny new megaphone?

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

I originally had a switcheroo joke about being an undemocratic Russian stooge, but then I remembered how he and his like stocked the 2016 nutters, and we lost Jo Cox. As much as I don't like the guy no one should be attacked just for standing democratically.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

Stop blaming right-wing violence on backlash against right-wing violence.
