On this day in 1967, the Israeli Army occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip, claiming emergency powers with a military decree that greatly restricts the rights of the occupied. The ongoing occupation is the longest in the modern era.

The Israeli Army action took place in the context of the Six Day War, fought between Israel and a coalition of Arab states. The status of the West Bank as a militarily occupied territory has been affirmed by the International Court of Justice and, with the exception of East Jerusalem, by the Israeli Supreme Court.

According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), the military proclamation issued by the Israeli Army on June 7th, 1967 permitted the application of the Defense (Emergency) Regulations of 1945.

These regulations empowered, and continue to empower, authorities to declare as an "unlawful association" groups that advocate for "bringing into hatred or contempt, or the exciting of disaffection against" the authorities, and criminalize membership in or possession of material belonging to or affiliated, even indirectly, with these groups.

HRW goes on to state that these and other broad restrictions on the occupied population violate international law: "The Israeli army has for over 50 years used broadly worded military orders to arrest Palestinian journalists, activists and others for their speech and activities - much of it non-violent - protesting, criticizing or opposing Israeli policies. These orders are written so broadly that they violate the obligation of states under international human rights law to clearly spell out conduct that could result in criminal sanction."

Following the military occupation of the West Bank, Israel began expropriating the land and facilitating Israeli settlements in the area, broadly considered a violation of international law. While Israelis in the West Bank are subject to Israeli law and given representation in the Israeli Knesset, Palestinian civilians, mostly confined to scattered enclaves, are subject to martial law and are not permitted to vote in Israel's national elections.

This two-tiered system has inspired comparisons to apartheid, likening the dense disconnected pockets that Palestinians are relegated to with the segregated Bantustans that previously existed in South Africa when the country was still under white supremacist rule.

So I'm feeling down today for various reasons. I desperately need some de-stressing escapism. Fortunately I have no obligations today, so I decided to make it a "me" day. Turned off all my phone notifications, got comfy on the couch, got some snacks, ready to just relax. So I loaded up Star Trek TNG on my kodi box, and randomized the playlist. I've decided to just watch whatever episode comes up, no skipping, no interruptions.

First episode to play: "Shades of Gray".

Fuck you, universe.

A pleasant update. The older I get the more I appreciate Gates McFadden's acting. Especially her facial expressions. I know the original TNG premise involved getting away from a captain/first officer/doctor focused dynamic as a way to differentiate it from TOS. But I really wish that Crusher was much more prominent in the series.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiling_frog

The wikipedia page for the boiling frog analogy is so funny.

While some 19th-century experiments suggested that the underlying premise is true if the heating is sufficiently gradual,[2][3] according to modern biologists the premise is false: changing location is a natural thermoregulation strategy for frogs and other ectotherms, and is necessary for survival in the wild. A frog that is gradually heated will jump out. Furthermore, a frog placed into already boiling water will die immediately, not jump out.[4][5]

lea-smug: "You know the frog would just die right? It'd just jump out if the water got too hot because of thermoregulation"

Modern scientific sources report that the alleged phenomenon is not real. In 1995, Douglas Melton, a biologist at Harvard University, said, "If you put a frog in boiling water, it won't jump out. It will die. If you put it in cold water, it will jump before it gets hotβ€”they don't sit still for you." George R. Zug, curator of reptiles and amphibians at the National Museum of Natural History, also rejected the suggestion, saying that "If a frog had a means of getting out, it certainly would get out."[4] In 2002, Victor H. Hutchison, a retired zoologist at the University of Oklahoma with a research interest in thermal relations of amphibians, said that "The legend is entirely incorrect!" He described how a critical thermal maximum for many frog species has been determined by contemporary research experiments: as the water is heated by about 2 Β°F (about 1 Β°C), per minute, the frog becomes increasingly active as it tries to escape, and eventually jumps out if it can.[5]

lea-breakdown: "They don't sit still for you! Why doesn't anyone get it!??"

All the frog enjoyers came out to debunk this and I salute them for it.

What i'm learning from twitter: authors hate literature, and especially hate engaging with it in any sort of meaningful way. Lol, saw what was essentially a "the curtains are fucking blue" tweet from one author, followed by one saying that James Joyce would be forgotten if he wasn't "forced" on people by English teachers.

Have you ever started to make a connection with someone you meet on a dating app? You both want to meet up for coffee real soon in real life to see if the chemistry works in the real world too? And you add each other on snapchat?

And then your snapchat "quick add" list (which is basically a list of friends-of-friends) starts showing usernames like "16MTOP" and "20 (11-15 HMU)" and "15btm"?

And you start to question every single red flag detector in your head because they are obviously all malfunctioning and didn't see this coming?

And you just want to curl up on a couch and binge watch 1980s and 1990s sci-fi TV shows for a decade or two in solitude because no one can be trusted anymore?

I've been out as bi since like 2015 but still haven't really been enjoying anything much since i've just been arguing with people online the whole time and it's kind of eroded my ability to place any actual trust in anyone. I just kind of don't really like other people or the idea of having to try to actually interact with them (especially offline) that much. The disillusionment and contempt run too deep. I just kind of assume everyone's a /pol/ user by default.

Hell, I've barely managed to squeak out two relationships that whole time, across my late teens and the bulk of my twenties, both long distance. Barely have friends, either. I think i'm in a committed thing with my own fear.

is there a better use of our time in the next 5 months than trying to get jill stein elected? I was originally with cornel west but he's not gonna be on the ballots in most states, where Stein will be on the ballot in at least 48.

I get that electoralism has it's limits but it's weird that so many people who were part of the bernie movement freeze up when you try to talk about taking that movement outside the democratic party. Like I believe that democracy is possible. Voting won't solve anything but it's another front in the bigger struggle. One I'm not prepared to surrender on.

The GOP and DNC are morally and intellectually bankrupt. Other countries elect badasses now and again. We've got 5 months. I don't know, I'm willing to try. I really think the time is now for a radical change. But if people think I'm wrong I'm open to hearing why.

My party keeps scheduling important things when I'm at work and I feel like a bad communist for missing them, to the extent that I wonder if I should reach out to other friendly orgs and ask what days I need to be available for mandatory classes and stuff.

At least the parties here are mostly very comradely with each other so I don't think I'd be betraying my new boomer friends too much.

Dating Rant:Match with someone on Hinge. We both have autism and hit it off pretty good. Bond over how shitty people expect us to be people we're not and how much we hate navigating NT society. Specifically mention we wish more people would just communicate directly. Continue talking for a few weeks, meet up with her friend group but never go on a 1:1 date. I ask her out 2-3 times but she's always busy or says another time. She stops talking to me eventually. They told a mutual acquaintance we couldn't be friends because "they wouldn't pick up on any of my hints that I wasn't interested."

I'm not even that upset about being rejected. It just sucks that the one person I thought would understand my need for unambiguous language and communication still expected me to be neurotypical.

the fact that i can have an ibs flareup on a friday is proof that there is no god. you could say that i shouldn't have eaten halal and chugged beer last night, that i should take responsibility for the consequences of my actions, that i should learn better long-term planning and to deny isntant gratification more. but i could also say fuck you, hold my nuts, i live my life i carve my path i follow my own code, you clearly know nothing of the Sigma Way

So my work is at the bottom floor of an awful boogie condo complex for very rich people. The building super is this awful old dude who spends his entire day walking his admittedly cool dogs and patrolling the building and it's his little freedom. I used to live next to the building and still work within it and many people on staff fucking hate this prick including me. There are 2 incidents thsr made this happen for me, the first was having a key for the back door that us smokers used to go smoke and not walk through a restaurant after. He saw I had this key, which we must have gotten from the property owener cause who else would have it and raised a giant stink, we probably could have gone over his head but this hotheaded weirdo we had on dish decided this was grounds to physically confront the guy so that option died, i was the one he noticed with a key and despite how much i kept telling him to tske it the fuck up with management he wouldnt let me go andnkept grilling me until i told him to fuck off in tjosneexact words, later there was a ceiling leak that he decided to blame on me for mentioning I did notice a drip.the day before. This was a leak right above the dish pit, in summer and the fans still needed fixing, steam from the machine could easily condense in the tile.and leak down but once again this guy decided I was the one to blame and when I didn't tske his crap he said I had 'attitude' like I'm not in my mid 30s. My chef has dealt with his overly confrontational Knight of the Condo bs as well so I went off on him hard and faced no consequences. He has been a massive asshole to other co-workers about parking as well. Now we have a sidewalk patio and he just goes and sits there with his dogs for hours. I am begging for permission to tell this fuck it's a table at a restaurant and not a park bench. Anyone else can totally use it and I wouldn't care. I just really fucking hate this guy.

I don't think I've ever had the volume on when scrolling past that "gen z is trying to cancel eminem" vide. I thought the lady was just doing an annoying rant, she starts rapping??

I was legoing some ikea ass furniture inside next to a window. I'm like 10 feet away from construction workers rebuilding the house next door to me in the summer heat. I've always really enjoyed putting heavy shit together but I couldn't help but feel like a toddler playing work next to their parents

Was still a lot of fun I wish more friends would ask me to help assemble their stuff
