Donโ€™t know what this technique/style is but I love the bold, impressionistic (?) brushwork. Thereโ€™s something about making as few, but confidently well placed marks as possible - while still capturing the essence of the subject and it feeling dynamic - that pleases me.

After thinking about it for a bit, I concluded that it works so exceptionally well in this instance because this is drawing hairs using hairs (on the brush). I might be wrong though, I know jack shut about art.

I have seen this sort of minimal treatment work well for (human) portraits too.

Of course, but I would say that here it reaches levels of realism that it shouldn't be able to.
