I forgot who said it, but I remember reading that a lot of this reaction is from suburban men who suddenly find themselves aimless in a world where they have been alienated from the means of achieving "traditional" masculine roles. But instead of questioning these expectations on themselves, they embrace them and perform an exaggerated version of them.
