This feature must have cost a lot to research and develop but wouldn’t really make Apple anything in return - no subscriptions or payments for using the satellites.

Well, not quite. Right now, it’s only free for 2 years, then you have to subscribe. But apparently they’re planning on making it a completely free service in the future.
