I don't get anything about this, especially the word deaths being censored

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 76 points 1 year ago (4 children)

The shit these children censor pisses me off more than it really should

It’s not children censoring things. It’s people obfuscating words that may get flagged and have their post removed.

These days software can scan images and videos and not just text, for violations of whatever rules they have.

Like on most of the mainstream platforms just the audible mention of suicide gets you flagged. So people have adopted ways to avoid detection like saying unalive instead of suicide.

This censoring of the word death is not for ethical reasons as you are insinuating.

Basically don’t let it piss you off. Terrible hill to die on.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 year ago

Fuck that’s it’s stupid as shit

[–] DannyMac@lemm.ee 23 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I hate it too, but it is to prevent their post from getting flagged and/or removed. It's a new form of censorship that came into being from advertisers who don't want their products associated with certain topics. The advertisers then threaten to stop advertising on the platform which caused the platform to automate cracking down on any topic that isn't considered advertiser friendly, regardless of how innocent the word's use is.

When this happens "d֎ath" is inevitable.

WHICH PLATFORM

Fucking boycott that shit, we don't need that in our internet

[–] DannyMac@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

It's all of them.

Hey, did you know your profile is set to appear as a bot and as a result many may be filtering your posts and comments? You can change this in your Lemmy profile settings.

[–] DannyMac@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thanks, I'm not sure how that happened!

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

No worries, thank you for acknowledging it. I've run into this enough that I think maybe the wording of the setting should be more clear.

As many have sort of pointed out, it's not the children. The censorship comes from grown ups running companies. The result is people who just want to speak freely needing to speak slightly differently.

Any website that censors the word "death" should be boycotted

[–] HowManyNimons@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Websites don't censor any more: they demonetise.

more than it really should

Yep.

2023 is that Oceangate idiot who went down in an oil barrel and took his terrified son and a bunch of businessmen down with him and it quickly imploded, killing all of them.

[–] Shady_Shiroe@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

I honestly forgot about that despite it being big news here for like a week or two

[–] ShortFuse@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Ironically, I was triggered.

How are there still so many deaths 10 years before and after the Titanic sank?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago (3 children)

My guess is that, due to less effective methods of record keeping, not everyone was immediately identified and declared dead.

As for why people died BEFORE boarding the Titanic but still count, I'm afraid that I don't have any non-gruesome theories 🤷

[–] Cosmicomical@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It had to be built, I'm sure work safety regulations were not a thing back then

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about that! That's probably it.

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 15 points 1 year ago

The Dry Dock Strangler was nigh uncatchable they say

[–] HowManyNimons@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Boat builders. You reckon workers had safety rights in 1900s - 1910s Belfast?

I like to think that this graph is just a rough representation, not an absolutely accurate drawing.

Partly /s

[–] OldWoodFrame@lemm.ee 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

OH I GOT IT! The submarine that imploded was heading for the Titanic.

Leaving the explanation here because I was so frustrated 38 comments in nobody even made a joke that was helpful for explaining the meme.

[–] LeroyJenkins@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

no actually it was because in 2023 there was another Titanic that was built in memorial to the original but they only sent 5 people on it that time. it met the same fate on its maiden voyage. megalodon attack.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

By now there should be a few zombies down there.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Relax, there's no zombies down there. They were all eaten by Cthulhu.

Nothing to worry about.

[–] Tagger@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Surely the trend line shouldn't start at the very top of the peak?

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We have no recorded history of things named titanic or Titan prior. We should add death by giants to the graph

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

We have recorded fiction, however. Prepare to have your mind blown:
