welp everyone at least we have this little forum. be ironic if hexbear becomes like a BBS of old and we are just sharing links to the last few trustworthy sources of information on the planet.

could be fun

[–] mayo_cider@hexbear.net 49 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm the last trustworthy source, just check my profile

Kinda want to go back to a simpler internet like this.

Maybe we should all start a blogring?

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 44 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's where Lemmy really seems like the next stage of social media. I don't want a corporation running things or gamification or liberal censorship, just the same kind of forum I had in 2003 with the addition of networking. This is about as positive as social media gets as a technology and it's such a better experience than legacy platforms.

sooner or later they'll find a way to make you have to federate with some conglomerate of instances or else you'll miss out on shiny things and you'll be stuck in the same ol shit

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 27 points 1 year ago

I don't even know what shiny thing I could be tempted with. Social media companies have spent the last 20 years trying to out-shiny each other and the only feature I actually liked was Myspace's blogging community. The only thing of value for me here is sharing things I like with people who aren't rabid fascists. Add anything to that and it's self-defeating. Reddit's karma system is wildly toxic, twitter's signal boosting would just invite weird stalkers, facebook's friend networks make the platform feel like isolated islands. The only things that would improve Hexbear for me are self-created subcommunities like Lemmy.ml and a larger userbase. The latter is coming and for the former I just made a Lemmy.ml account, but they're already poisoned by reddit's karma.

god i miss the old BBS days.. back when you could actually meet the people you talked to because they were all local.... at least the BBS' i used because I was a kid and my parents would have murdered me if i tried to make a long distance call

[–] Des@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i never experienced BBS but did enjoy usenet but now thinking back it was a bit like reddit only not quite as lame

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

as fond of my memories are, there wasn't much you could do beyond visiting the message boards, join the local chat and hope someone was on, or download a file at like 2.5 kb/s

[–] Hello_Kitty_enjoyer@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

and we are just sharing links to the last few trustworthy sources of information on the planet.

it's already like that now

[–] SnowySkyes@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

I've been using the same BBCode forum for the past 17 years and I wouldn't mind this at all.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 59 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It's going to own when hospitals fire doctors and use ai and it tells the robot to inject gasoline into diabetic patients.

[–] Bloobish@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

Oh don't worry they'll still have nurses doing the direct care, how else are they gonna throw people under the bus? Can't exactly sue a robot or charge it for manslaughter now can you...
