Richard Oakes, born on this day in 1942, was a Mohawk indigenous activist and leader within the Red Power movement, playing a prominent role in the 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 - 1971.

Oakes promoted Native American studies in university curricula and is credited for helping to change U.S. federal government "Termination" policies (policies regarding assimilation of indigenous people into the culture of the colonizer) of Native American peoples and culture.

In 1969, Oakes led a 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island with LaNada Means, approximately 50 California State University students, and 37 others. On January 5th, 1970, Oakes' 12-year-old daughter, Yvonne, fell to her death from concrete steps. After her funeral, Oakes left the island.

In 1972, Oakes was shot and killed in Sonoma, California, by Michael Morgan, a YMCA camp manager. Allegedly, Oakes violently confronted Morgan, and Morgan responded by drawing a handgun and fatally shooting Oakes.

Oakes was unarmed when he was shot. Morgan claimed he acted in self-defense, and was acquitted on charges of voluntary manslaughter.

"We do not fear your threat to charge us with crimes on our land. We and all other oppressed peoples would welcome spectacle of proof before the world of your title by genocide. Nevertheless, we seek peace."

Richard Oakes

He flipped open his marble composition book and entered the professor's outfit (stained gray pants with an elastic waistband, yellow button-down, brown poly-blend V-neck sweater, shoes that could only be described as brogues) into his fashion log. English and film professors obviously ranked highest, broken down by period: Modernists, then film production professors, then feminist film theorists, and so on, with the occasional medievalist throwing off the curve. The outlier medievalists were usually Marxists, of course, and Marxists or queers in any period shot to the top. Paul didn't trust anyone in the sciences -hard or soft-to dress themselves, and he had the data to make the argument. This was the gift of gen ed requirements, Paul thought: exposure to so many different aesthetics.

TLDR: Nurgle is pleased, I am broken.

Absolutely miserable day at work. The trash compactor has been broken 3 days. Entire receiving area is filled with various carts, pallets, and other creative ways of storing bags full of trash, recycling, and rotting food.

CW: mentions of animal products

There is a u-cart covered in blood from the meat department over filling bags with unsellable product. It leaked all over the floor.

The stench is heinous. Bugs are everywhere.

Because the selling departments don’t understand anything about receiving, a pallet covered in bags of rotting plant matter was raising the bays trophic level right in front of the truck plate. Some butcher dumbass placed a bag full of at least 60 pounds of rotten pork shoulder on top (haphazardly).

I discovered this creative take on on showing how broken our food systems are by covering it all in plastic and letting the blood drip all over the plant stuff as a demonstration of how our system merely grows livestock feed to fuel our meat addiction, until it rolled off. I had to bear hug that piece of shit to lift it into massive cardboard storage thingy that is the most recent vessel to fall victim to the rotten food overflow. At least hundreds of dollars worth of corpse just rotting in a broken bag.
