Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

It took me a full two rereadings to realize this article is somehow trying to cast Greta in a negative light.

[–] InappropriateEmote@hexbear.net 60 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I get what you're saying, everything the article is hand-wringing about is in reality extremely good and necessary, so any thinking person's reaction is "wait, you're saying that's bad?" But the author's perspective was clear from the get-go with lines like "Forget saving the planet - now she wants to save Palestine" You can just feel the smug eyeroll. And referring to activists as "climate zealots" in the byline. You can easily tell that Brenden feels revulsion for the people who feel revulsion for the capitalism that is so dear to his precious little heart.

Also calling her a "queen"

[–] pmarcilus@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 1 year ago

Well, that's not wrong tho

[–] ProletarianDictator@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

shes only known for one thing, therefore she can only care about one thing. caring about two things makes her a hypocrite

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 92 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Forget saving the planet - now she wants to save Palestine.

Oh no, first she wants to save humanity (and the planet) from extinction, and now she's opposing an active genocide! The horror!

Face the fucking wall, Brendan. how-compelling-flipped

Palestine is on the planet

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You can’t save part of the planet when you claim to want to save the whole thing. It’s like being a communist but having an iPhone or a vuvuzela.

"If we can't make the world perfect overnight it should just suck forever." - Hilary Clinton

God is in Her heaven, and all is right in the world planet-hillary

This one young woman just lives rent free in reactionaries brains.

This emoji always makes me cackle with child-like glee

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 78 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Palestine, famously not a part of the world

[–] lugal@lemmy.ml 38 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I guess the author wish it wasn't...

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

I wish the author wasn't

Greta is genuinely an incredible human

[–] FumpyAer@hexbear.net 61 points 1 year ago (1 children)

She saw the truth at like 14 and then could not stop thinking about it. And actually did shit.

I want to be more like her.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 39 points 1 year ago

It's not too late. For you or for any of us

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

All the boomers in my life always said she was controlled by her parents.

Doesn't look like it to me.

[–] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 67 points 1 year ago

waahhh how come today's youth have a consistent moral backbone and an ideologically consistent worldview???

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 51 points 1 year ago

Who'd have thought that climate activists might have criticisms of the system that is actively and willfully incinerating the planet?

[–] axont@hexbear.net 48 points 1 year ago

I looked into this Brendan O'Neill guy. He's obsessed with Thunberg. He calls climate activism a cult and once mocked her for being neurodivergent. He's some right wing Australian ghoul

[–] hexinvictus@hexbear.net 46 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What's the matter Brendan? Jealous because a kid stands for something and you don't ?

[–] jaywalker@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Greta's actually a full-blown adult now and it makes me feel pretty old.

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That means nothing, I'm in my 30s and I've still had maybe-later-honey types treat me like a rebellious child

[–] TrashGoblin@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago

I'm in my 50s. I get it until I tell them how old I am. Then I assume they just consider me an idiot.

This level of slop makes me sometimes wonder what context the author is operating in. Like is this a Sunday night "oh shit I need something for deadline" or did they spend a couple days on this?

I hope this is Brendan quiet quitting. Minimum effort. "Greta is a land of contrasts" level shit. But, he's probably worked on this for awhile.

[–] axont@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

This is like his 12th article pearl clutching over her

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 36 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Me actually in environmentalist circles: "Whole lotta libs here"

(To be fair, a lot of comrades as well)

It is, unfortunately, the same struggle as all left of centre causes on that front. Glad to see some sense being spoken though (even if this article feels super weird and artificial? Maybe I'm scared of my own shadow now because of AI idk)

Edit: Apparently this article is instead written by a right wing weirdo who's obsessed with Thunberg so close enough to AI lmao

Oh, we do stan a queen.

[–] alexandra_kollontai@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago

"exposed" has this ever been a secret? There's a reason green parties also support wealth redistribution more than liberals.

Anybody with two brain cells to rub together knows that we have a choice between capitalism and the future. And you're surprised they're against the status quo of just having capitalism for a short time?

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

what fucking article is this?

[–] culpritus@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The upper-middle class recycling obsessive in Hampstead might seem a million miles from the bearded radical who publicly sings the praises of Allah – but they share an instinctive revulsion for capitalist society. One sees it as a crime against Mother Nature, the other as an affront to Muhammad.
