The Nintendo Network service, that handled online play for the vast majority of 3DS and Wii U games, Splatoon included, was shut down on the 8th of April. So yes, the official servers for Splatoon are dead.

Thank you for the Information. Down, or dead.. forever?

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.de 15 points 2 years ago

Dead for ever. There is Pretendo though which is a replacement.

Why the downvotes? Bad englisch? I don't get it.

I think because you appear to clarify something that was seemingly clear in the first post. But if English isn't your first language that's understandable.

Ok - thanks. Yes it's not my first language and it was not clear for me. Words often have two or there meanings and I was not sure about it. So I asked.

Checkout https://pretendo.network to use the open source replacement for Nintendo's servers

Is it possible to use this with the wiiu console, or only with PC?

[–] redcalcium@lemmy.institute 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yes, use the SSSL (hackles) setup: https://pretendo.network/docs/install/wiiu#sssl

This doesn't require homebrew, all you need is changing the DNS address on the WiiU from the system setting.

Very cool. Looks good - I will try it.

[–] experiencersinternational@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

SSSL does not currently work

I recall you commenting on one of our posts about your son playing Splatoon 1, I really hope he's able to play soon

For the moment, you need to install custom firmware to play Splatoon 1, linking official statement since not many people have been reporting on it (even us)
