Ok America is definitely going to ban Chinese solar panels and guarantee an extra degree of warming

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 56 points 1 year ago

They absolutely will.

These fucking people I swear, they believe in market fairies. They think that if they ban imports, domestic supply will suddenly materialize from nowhere. They're willing to ban but not willing to invest. Unless it's some hare brained scheme where they write a capitalist a check for $20B to build a $2B factory

Why would anyone build a big panel factory when the tariffs can just as easily be reversed? Also where are we supposed to get the knowledge and equipment?

It's all so profoundly stupid, backwards, and FRUSTRATING when you clearly have an example of an alternate system that works and yet refuse to adopt it because of greed, of all things

xi-plz

Ironic in a way that productive forces are so developed in China that the communists have become free marketeers while the capitalists are back to doing hardcore 18th century protectionist mercantilism.

China really learned from the mistakes of the Soviet Union. They let the capitalists in and the capitalists gleefully destroyed their own productive capacity for a quick profit. This is what long term planning uninterrupted by the endless moving of deck chairs on the Titanic (American elections) gets you.

[–] duderium@hexbear.net 43 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed but to be fair, I think the Soviets would have done this if they could have, but they were facing an imminent invasion from the Nazis and had to batten down the hatches. China’s borders seem more secure to me compared with the USSR, which had lengthy borders with imperialist countries.

Very good point

[–] bubbalu@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago

That is a very good metaphor! Thank you.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 54 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"cheap" lol

Thank you for protecting us from inexpensive, quality cars

[–] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 36 points 1 year ago

Don't you want to buy a $100k Playstation 1 graphics Truck which gives you an amazing drive of 35 miles before breaking down?

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 51 points 1 year ago

Most environmentally progressive president

[–] Teekeeus@hexbear.net 51 points 1 year ago

Thankfully there's no inflation and transportation is supremely affordable in the united states

[–] princeofsin@hexbear.net 43 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Capitalist are such fucking pussies

"You will only buy our overpriced low quality American EVs and you will like it plebs." - US state dept

The Ford F-150 Lightning, obviously

[–] TeddyKila@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

Worse Joules/Km than the gasoline F-150 agony-shivering

[–] viva_la_juche@hexbear.net 39 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Damn lol.

I saw a lib on tiktok saying “Chinese cars are not banned in America they just have a 28% tariff!” Not too long ago and even with that I was like wow that’s a lot lol

[–] Rx_Hawk@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mean I’m not aware of any Chinese brand that is in compliance with US regulations, so yeah they are illegal to drive in America.

[–] viva_la_juche@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago

I’m sure they’d just say “well those manufacturers could just follow U.S. regulations” or something

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 37 points 1 year ago

If you can't beat em, block em. That's the American way.

US is so good at capitalism they gotta make competition illegal

[–] NewLeaf@hexbear.net 32 points 1 year ago

Like I'll ever be able to afford a car that's newer than ten years old anyway.

[–] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 30 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Just as expected. it doesn't matter if you do tariffs if you leave it to the free market. there has to be planning for protectionism to work, the capitalists have to obey you like in China or have it be state owned else they will keep making overpriced garbage.

[–] TowardsTheFuture@lemmy.zip 30 points 1 year ago

Won’t someone think of all the poor collusion and inflation these affordable and well made cars would harm!

[–] JayTwo@hexbear.net 30 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I just want a new EV that doesn't cost 40k+ yes-honey-left

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 year ago

I just want trains to every city

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

The BYD Seagull starts at 11-12k. Double that and it’s still relatively affordable. There is no way forward for US EV manufacturing, they’re cooked

[–] TheDoctor@hexbear.net 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So the price is going to be doubled artificially? What absolute horseshit

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago

Don't worry, the US has your best interests in mind. Now how can I get you out the door in a Mustang Mach-e today? It's only $1000/month on a 10 year loan with a low interest rate of 17.8%

[–] DyingOfDeBordom@hexbear.net 27 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Keep trying Biden, they're just gonna make them so cheap the tariff is nothing!

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They’re already there, honestly

[–] DyingOfDeBordom@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

idk a 11k car becoming 22k when I could buy like some toyota or some bullshit for 11k is a hard sell for me, a poor person who already can't afford an 11k car

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sorry if I came across as being dismissive. What I meant was that China already has such a competitive advantage that they’re going to corner the EV market no matter what. Poorer people will still be priced out of it, same as they are now with Tesla and the Ford Volt.

As much as I don’t believe EVs are how we tackle the climate crisis, this is still a net loss for the planet.

[–] DyingOfDeBordom@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

oh no you're good dawg, yeah I agree

[–] Shinji_Ikari@hexbear.net 27 points 1 year ago

Reminds me of the chicken tax. Less state dept, more economic warfare on a rising japan. Sorry americans, no small pickups, only child squishers.

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago

If you double the price of a $20K car that’s still only 40K for essentially the best EV you can get in the US. And I think the cheapest I’ve seen is actually 11k. The Chinese are still gonna take your markets, you’ll just be taxing the buyers and suppressing their buying power

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 24 points 1 year ago

But what's the deal with inflation?? Such a mystery!

[–] CarbonScored@hexbear.net 19 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I wonder how hard it is to smuggle electric vehicles, 10-50k is a big profit margin.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

Whether or not I believe in the free-market is irrelevant, because capitalists most certainly don't.

[–] Rx_Hawk@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago

I want a BYD Han so bad

[–] Hexamerous@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

It's simple supply and command.
