Hello, Windows 10 user of about a year now. I would like to switch to Linux (Ubuntu or Debian), but have a couple of questions.

  1. Is there a way to play steam games designed for Windows on Linux?/What are the drawbacks of doing this?
  2. Is there a way to transfer files from my old OS to the new one without using external drives (i dont have one ;-;)
  3. Is there a distro more suited to a Windows user going into linux rehab?
  4. Is there anything else I should be aware of?

TIA as always comrades and good day.

  1. Valve released a compatibility layer called proton that will automatically install alongside your windows games. The main downside is that multiplayer games with anticheat will only work if the developer has enabled the option on their end, but it doesnt take much effort for them to do, and most have already done so.

  2. Encrypt the stuff you want to keep then upload it to google drive.

  3. I usually reccomend Ubuntu or Linux mint as their interfaces are familiar, and theyre generally regarded as the more stable and feature complete options.

4.1) Whenever you encounter a problem, 99% of the time, somebody else has already encountered it and found a solution.

4.2) Dont be afraid of the terminal, it won't bite.

4.3) Download all your software through your distro's repository instead of from the browser. Everything in that repository has been vetted and verified.
