Not it doesn't. The first amendment clearly states that you cannot criticize Israel.

[–] AcidLeaves@hexbear.net 50 points 1 year ago

Pretty sure the first amendment also protects the right to blame everything on the Chinese

Love how liberals have just dropped the pretense of any critical thought and just start mixing up all their buzzwords in a frothing, incoherent rage

I think that's just the start of that copypasta that's been popular on reddit for a while

I wonder what would happen if balloon boy happened now. Would it have been a dumb made up story about a kid stuck in a balloon, or would it be chuds swearing there was a tiny Chinese man in it taking pictures of them.

Only one way to find out

absolutely hilarious way to die, having the government spend a million dollars to kill you with a whole ass missile in a fit of nationalism.

china has spy satellites

and it is well within their right

they also have satellites that are used for other military purposes like long range targeting and such

It's gonna be funny when this gets to the Supreme Court

Either they undermine their own sacred texts and they say the government gets to define what is or isn't free speech, or they go against the opinion of the overwhelming majority of the political class of this country

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 57 points 1 year ago (4 children)

I think they'll go for the first option, and this will open Pandora's box on all sorts of government censorship which will clog up the Supreme Court's docket. Then they'll go through, case by case, and determine what free speech protections apply to every single grievance brought before them.

Banning queer literature will be allowed by the first amendment, banning racist posters on Facebook will be illegal, etc

[–] Wolfman86@hexbear.net 35 points 1 year ago

Very predictable. At this point it appears “free speech” is just a nice term for racism.

[–] Maoo@hexbear.net 34 points 1 year ago

The habit of this court is to rule in favor of whatever they want while trying to claim it's a limited decision (and even saying to not use the decision as precedent!).

I think that's the most likely outcome. They'll say it's a special case because of some technicality and go forward with it.

Or hell they might just do the usual, "national security trumps all" piece of misdirection I dunno.

I don’t think this will go over as nonchalantly as that. This is a genuine constitutional crisis that will probably radicalize a mass of people. Obviously we don’t really care about the constitution here, but most Americans have the idea that the freedom of speech is something you have here. Add onto that their favorite app treat is getting banned and this seems like a pretty big deal.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not so sure...the anti-China propaganda brainworms have a solid grip on so many people.

[–] Tunnelvision@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

Right, which is why it’s important to frame this as an attack on free speech, which it is.

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

My expectation as well

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 29 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i love how every time this happens i get to yell at people that the supreme court is illegitimate and a complete political

there are still fools who think it is some kind of sacred institution that should be respected

[–] JohnBrownNote@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago

[–] NewLeaf@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

Tik tock about to find out ~~why we don't have healthcare~~ that our justice system only works in favor of the elites

I’ll honestly be really surprised if even this Supreme Court doesn’t block this. I don’t think they’ll shred that level of credibility for something that’s not their thing. They’re willing to burn their reputation, for sure, but I don’t think they’ll be willing to do it for “that weird tiktok thing those dickheads in Congress did”
