The NYT: "Us seperating Jews into good and bad Jews and equating Jewishness with zionism certainly isn't antisemitic, but a Jewish student calling out the systematic displacement, starving, bombing and medical neglect of two million people probably is!"

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 49 points 1 year ago

Jews have been at the forefront of calling out injustice and standing in solidarity with other marginalized people. Conflating those tendencies with antisemitism is so deranged and disgusting. Fucking NYT.

"How come all these Jews are being antisemitic? Don't they know Zionism is a part of Judaism?"

-New York Times

Between the willfully stupid argument and the paternalistic snobbishness that is tantamount to antisemitism itself, that's quite a remarkably atrocious headline and subhead

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

nerd quibblingI think that's a subhead, a byline gives the name of the author

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago

subhead

Ah, you're right; I always get those two confused, edited

Jerry Seinfeld and a paedophile go into a bar with Jerry's 17 year-old girlfriend. And it's the same person.

Antisemitic:

  • Saying genocide is bad
  • Jews who say Zionism don’t represent their beliefs
  • Jews who say people shouldn’t support a modern day holocaust

Not antisemitic:

  • zionists giving millions of dollars to far right politicians and celebrities
  • inviting fascist speakers to universities
  • allowing fascists to “protest” on campus and in public spaces with little pushback from the government
  • beating, arresting, and doxing Jews who say genocide is bad
  • ignoring Jewish voices because they’re not Zionists
[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago

Not antisemitic: claiming Jews uncontrollably will murder multiple kids for each of their own losses

The students invoke historical issues of colonialism and apartheid.

colonialism and apartheid are things of the past, silly! don't believe your lying eyes, we don't have those anymore!

“Let’s take any other ethnic or religious minority,” said Eden Yadegar, a junior at Columbia. “Would you only accept them if they were willing to denounce an integral part of their religious or ethnic identity? The answer is absolutely not. So how come it’s OK to say, you know, we accept Jews, but only if you denounce your religious and social and ethnic connection to your homeland? It’s ridiculous.”

Zionism is obviously not an integral part of the Jewish identity, if it were there wouldn't be publicly Jewish anti-Zionists.

Would you only accept them if they were willing to denounce an integral part of their religious or ethnic identity?

If an integral part of their religion was committing genocide, yes I would absolutely not accept them. I'd probably say barbara-pit with them. Fortunately a lot of Jewish people have figured out how to be Jewish without the whole genocide thing. Wild how that works.

^ Zionism isn’t even remotely integral to Judaism as far as I know. The only ethnicity that has genocide as a core part of its religion and ethnicity is white people.

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Of course it isn't actually integral, or there wouldn't be Jewish people protesting israel. Lots of people have one without the other.

[–] EelBolshevikism@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Yeah I just wanted to do a bit about US Christianity (not liberation theology, liberation theology is chill)

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

Strictly, Zionism is opposed to religious Judaism, which is very clear on the Jews not being allowed to have a Jewish state in Eretz Yisrael until the Messiah comes (it's why most orthodox Jews are against it by default).

[–] JohnBrownNote@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

i'm not very up on my differences between the torah and the christianized old testament, but i'm pretty sure there's some "god said kill all these people" in there.

of course I haven't heard of anyone saying palestinians are actually amalekites, and we've all seen the video of the israeli cops shoving an old hasidic man protesting the genocide

[–] Outdoor_Catgirl@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago

If Central americans or Scandinavians or whoever were still doing pagan human sacrifices, I'd definitely say fuck those guys and their religion.

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago

The argument that apartheid and genocide are vital aspects of Jewish identity is obviously trash, but if we take it seriously, doesn’t it contain an implicit argument that the Nazis conducted the holocaust in self-defense?

[–] ferristriangle@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

I would go a step further and say that the implication that all Jews are complicit in the crimes of a genocidal settler colony is one of the most antiemetic things you could argue.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Before israel jewish identity didn't exist

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Didn't it exist at least pre WW2, with israel being created shortly after?

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

(i was being facetious) identity existed without "homeland" for two thousands years, obviously it can get by, and even if its nice to have, homeland shouldn't be site of ongoing horror for better part of the century

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

Thanks, I thought you meant it literally and was a little confused.

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The last point reminds me of notions of "my religion tells me to be racist or homophobic". Like, if your "homeland" (your homeland will always exist as a land, separate of whether or not there's a "Jewish state" there) can only exist through ethnic cleansing, I'd argue it's right to ask Jews to denounce it, AS WELL AS all non-Jews who support it, because most Zionists are not Jewish.

In the 2000 years or so since the Bar Kokhba revolt, Zionism has only existed for the last 200 years. This is like Dutch racists appealing to tradition to defend our blackface helpers, when Sinterklaas didn't have any helper(s) at all for centuries.

Also, I accidentally read "Eden Yadegar" as "Eren Yaeger" lol

[–] Leon_Frotsky@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

"sorry but if you tell me i have to disavow the crusades and the reconquista (on top of all the modern day christian fascists running around) as a christian then you're bigotted against all christians"

[–] dkr567@hexbear.net 28 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I would personally take the words of Pro-Palestinian protestors that actually practice Judaism about their movement over some NPC minded petite-bourgeoisie that only write propaganda pieces at NYT but what do I know?

[–] Gay_Tomato@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Think! New York Yimes Think! Your not supposed to mention that the protestors are Jewish. What "moral high ground" will you possibly have left when the only position you can hold is that antisemitism is a Jewish conspiracy? think-mark

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)
