So, had to sell my Sunn Model T clone today. Made enough to cover rent, meds, and pick up a replacement head!

"But corg, you play in a super dummy thicc doomnoise band, why sell such a fitting amp?"

Well, a number of reasons. It was an NVM build, so it was TOUGH to get it sounding good without overpowering the Matamp through its 2x15. What's more, is there was no effects loop to put a preamp on it.

Grabbed a brand new Hiwatt Super Leeds 150 with the money I had left over. Solid State, but have heard nothing but great things about the Crunch series, which this is an update of. Cool nerd thing - seems like there's only a handful of these in Canada, none in the states, guess Hiwatt only got one shipment over here since these just came out this month.

Hiwatt has an MV, on top of a direct out for recording. Fuck yeah.

Aight that's all.

I've got a cheap digital modeler amp and I like the way it sounds with my pedals. No way I'd use the drive on it tho lmao.

I should save up for a jazz chorus

I really need some on to look at my head. That hiwatt sounds awesome

I can play for about 45 minutes and the effects just die. It's a hybrid but I kinda think it's an old tube

What do you have? Could be a bad/intermittent solder joint if it's a PCB build.

[โ€“] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Marshall ATV150H definitely a PCB build

Oh hey! That's the generation after my Valvestate. Totally different circuit, but the good news is that it's probably not the tube, since it's only really used in the preamp stage. If it's the onboard effects cutting out and not the whole loop, it could be a handful of possible issues, including a bad solder joint somewhere near the power amp transistors. Those get pretty warm and could cause an intermittent connection to separate.

Your best bet is probably to take it to an amp tech; best-case, it's something obvious and they can just re-flow a couple of solder joints and maybe re-cap it for you. Worst case gets into discussions of whether it's cheaper to cannibalize the onboard effects DSP chip from a non-working eBay amp versus trying to find vendors with new old stock... Good luck. Those third-gen Valvestates are good amps in the "this is what the MG series should have been" sense.

Damn dude thanks for the good advice I might open it up tomorrow with a multi meter and see if I can find the solder joint.

Take a look at those electrolytic caps, too -- if they're the originals from 15-20 years ago, you probably have a couple that are getting iffy/sporting a bulge. Hell, it could even be a loose ribbon cable.

Bro! I plugged a cable all the way in and it works now! Thanks for the hope!

Hell yeah on getting something more suitable.

As much as we can be amp nerds, we still need to get our fancy little amps in the right operating conditions to do what we want.

I wish you well. Also grateful I still only play acoustic.

i've been trying to sell an h&k switchblade and a VHT Pitbull for like... 2 years now. I wish i could find someone who wanted it lol

VHT Pitbull

panting

...I wish I weren't broke and actually had the room to store another full-sized head.

If you've got working speakers ot Amp bodies and have basic sautering skills I could probably hook you up with my Amp Guy and mail ya the circuitry and things to pop into a shell and get yourself a dastardly custom made amp. You basically can just give the dude a few bands to go off as an example and vague descriptors and make exactly what you want from that.

Hell yeah, when I'm in the market again I'll hit you up

Have you checked out that new solid state Orange Super Crush? I keep seeing them used in the neighborhood of $350-400, and whenever I do, I think "this is probably up Corgi's alley." I don't know if a 100 watt solid state could quite keep up with the Matamp, though.

Those are sick, drummer has one
