Chat is a text only community for casual conversation, please keep shitposting to the absolute minimum. This is intended to be a separate space from c/chapotraphouse or the daily megathread. Chat does this by being a long-form community where topics will remain from day to day unlike the megathread, and it is distinct from c/chapotraphouse in that we ask you to engage in this community in a genuine way. Please keep shitposting, bits, and irony to a minimum.

As with all communities posts need to abide by the code of conduct, additionally moderators will remove any posts or comments deemed to be inappropriate.

Thank you and happy chatting!

I think the biggest thing that Hexbear has going for it is that there is a culture here that doesn't involve pandering to the voting audience.

Every conversation I have here feels like the other person is genuinely talking to me, not talking to an audience through me but talking to me directly, considering my words and seriously engaging with me even when we might disagree.

Over on reddit getting a real interaction with someone that doesn't involve in some way an attempt at pandering to possible voters is nearly impossible. Everything is influenced by the system. Everyone isn't really talking to each other but instead they talk to the audience.

It feels like an old bbs forum and holy hell I've missed that vibe

I do agree that is it. I think this may be the fundamental, awful problem with modern-day social media and basically all forms of online interaction, even big Discord servers. To actually have a conversation with someone is basically impossible, you're just only ever people at podiums shouting into the void.

I once made a reference to “genocide Joe” in a chat with a friend who I don’t normally talk politics with. He was confused - not because he thought what was going on in Gaza wasn’t a genocide, but because he had no idea what was even happening in Gaza, much less America’s involvement in it.

Polls on Americans’ opinions on things outside of the Lower 48 are completely pointless given how criminally ignorant most Americans are.

[–] assyrian@hexbear.net 46 points 1 year ago (1 children)

they did a survey recently and most Americans had no idea whether more Israelis or Palestinians have died

[–] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

tbf that's surely by design in terms of the obfuscatory coverage it's been given

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 42 points 1 year ago (2 children)

it's crazy when you say something extremely based, but nobody understood because you need to explain the meaning and historical context of 4 words and also 20 minutes catching them up on things that happened in the last 1-20 years.

[–] Florn@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago

I can't talk politics with the people around me because I would have to start by explaining the 30 Year's War

I thought for sure you were... Man you got me there. I was waiting for 69 years, like braced for it.

Polling exists to help media drive whatever narrative they want.

They aren't a great indicator of sentiment, or they tend to only be an indicator of a certain group's sentiment.

President Poopypants

It doesn't happen much any more but there are rare times I wish I had yet another unbanned alt I could use to post in r/PoliticalHumor. This is one of those times. Posting that could avoid the "not funny" trap even though a lib mod might still nuke it after just 30m or so for other reasons.

This was a good post

I like this place since people aren't gaslighting me about rl experiences or telling me I'm a bot/ai since there's no way xyz happened nor do multiple minorities like me exist. The politics is a big added bonus.

[–] ArsenLupin@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Akshually! 🤓☝️ It's obvious you're a Russian bot!!

[–] tamagotchicowboy@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

About 16pct there, more unhinged and openly bigoted and you'd have my every third interaction with reddit-logo before I just began mass blocking.

[–] tamagotchicowboy@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

I'm convinced whoever is playing this tamagotchi chucked the game out the window into the void of space on start.

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

do multiple minorities like me exist

oh like those libs who unironically say, without any even being prompted, that Intersectionality means "oppression olympics" but also oppression doesn't exist in general (therefore you're lying) (except you existing is oppressing them).

[–] tamagotchicowboy@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago

Ah, but have you considered: Piss?

[–] allthetimesivedied@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago

Yeah, when that friend stopped talking to me I ceased to have anyone to talk to about things like politics, fashion, media, etc., because I’m homeless, and every single person in my social milieu is either a fucking idiot, or if they have any interests at all that overlap with mine, they’re fucking insane and only want to talk about stupid shit like Morgellons disease, and drones.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago

I see you participated in the Beanis survey today then huh

The devs strategically placed the PPB button in the exact place where I keep accidentally touching the phone screen all the time. They did this on purpose to spite me

Sometimes when I go to click the modlog I'm only half paying attention and I hit ppb instead and don't notice until I've ppb'd myself.

This happens to me so often oooaaaaaaauhhh

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Did you see how Iran pathetic after idf-cool counter-strike to Iran’s counter-strike to idf-cool strike on Iran’s embassy in Syria. Really makes you think about us-foreign-policy in the time of biden-harbinger and the justified idf-destroyer hamas-red-triangle

[–] ta00000@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes! Release yourself from the fetters of bourgeois English!

This is a key element to why we're so based

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

[This post is just a fart noise that lasts over a minute.]

[–] ta00000@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago

There are a handful of topics that would be effectively impossible to talk about anywhere else because of the minefield of reactionary thought terminating cliches baked into Western culture. That is, so long as we didn't just have a struggle session boarding that topic.

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 13 points 1 year ago

Oh yeah, then how about you intellectually stimulate deez nuts with yo mouth

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

I like it here because it's a respite from the exhausting lib brained world we live in.

[–] ReadFanon@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Ye.

It's really nice not to have to litigate basic concepts or to have to gear up for some big ol' slapfight because I'm expecting the other people in the comments to be any kaleidoscopic arrangement of chauvinism.

There's so much I hold back on in more open spaces on the internet because I just don't want to deal with the bullshit so I shut up as a strategy to mitigate this.

I think it says a lot about this community and its culture, as well as the mods, that the space draws out more from me and higher quality contributions than most other spaces online.
