I hate seeing commercials in general. I hate when they try to be funny. I hate that insurance is a business.

But this commercial is such an intersection of obnoxious capitalist bullshit that I actively look away when the commercial starts playing.

Like fuck dude, they show the poor server getting a hand cramp and we're supposed to find that funny?

I'm going to write another comment breaking down specifically why I hate this particular commercial, but I'd love to hear other people's response to the ad.

One of their weaker ones (from what ones I have seen), yeah. Joke went on too long, wasn't really funny when he got to being buried.

Geico commercials feel like they just did everything they came up with in a brainstorming session.

im not seeing the particular egregiousness of this commercial. yeah, advertising is evil in general, but this one isn't really much worse than most of them. it's just a poorly executed skit, it could've been a funny skit if whoever directed it had a better sense of timing

In short, my issue is with a server being the butt of the joke like this. It just seems more mean spirited than funny. Like who is this for?

[–] booty@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

why exactly do you perceive the server as the butt of the joke? i do not think that was the intention. the joke is not "lol look at this stupid server making a mess" the mess is the customer's fault

[–] Magician@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The server is the one who's not in control of the situation. it's more like the customer is within his rights to inconvenience wait staff. I think when they lock eyes and the customer wants to keep going is supposed to be funny, but I just see a server having to indulge a customer.

[–] booty@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago

why is it "punching down" to portray a customer being unreasonable to wait staff? it's supposed to be funny because it's a situation where one person is being unreasonable and the other person responds to them in an equally unreasonable and silly way. no one is the butt of this joke, the joke is just "isn't this a silly situation"

I’m completely with you. They broke the number 1 rule of comedy, they punched down. In that exchange the customer has the power and yet the server is the butt of the joke.

Like who is this for?

Treat brained Americans that see servers as servants and don’t see anything wrong with this exchange as a “joke.”

It's not well-written and makes no actual sense ("as easy as grating parmesan", but it obviously looks like the server is struggling?) but here the customer is more the butt of the joke imo. He is shown to be unreasonable, while the server is the straight man who has to indulge the customer weirdo. I'm with the person before me, it's a bad commercial but not like egregiously extremely bad like some can get

On another viewing, I think I might see what you're saying. I was fully under the impression that the server was only going because the customer demanded it, not that the server was a willing participant who was actually being competitive.

I only see distress on the server's face while the customer, but maybe I missed something.
