The only people that like AI art are "businesses" that want to hire less employees like artists.

That's why capitalism is obsessed with it. Not because people actually want it, but because they can cut costs (at the expense of quality and people's livelihoods).

Not saying AI is inherently terrible. Just that it is dangerous in the hands of capitalists who have already kneecapped artists into taking the soul out of art (see the corporate art artists are forced to churn out).

Imagine how even more stale art is about to become under these ghouls.

I'm not on Facebook but Google and Microsoft are doing this shit as well. Why would I ever want this? What is fucking wrong with these people? Invent the tech then find a use? And if you can't actually solve a problem for me, force me to use it anyway? What the fuck.

The only problem capitalists seek to solve is "how do I make profit while keeping costs low as possible?"

With AI they won't have to pay artists at all, is their hope. It has nothing to do with what the people want.

Death to capitalism

The ability to potentially replace expensive labor is obviously one reason, but I’ll put another one on the table:

One of the biggest fundamental driving forces of the tech industry is creating more excuses to consume computing resources, whether that’s bandwidth, computing power, data storage, etc. Things that encourage increased use of those resources can create (or extract) value in and of themselves while also making money for the companies that own the infrastructure.

Computing infrastructure is a bit like real estate in that it’s very capital-intensive and generates a steady stream of rents, but it’s much more scalable than real estate as long as you can keep increasing the need for more computing resources. This is probably why crypto is still being pushed so heavily despite having no practical application.

AI tools are an excellent way of increasing consumption of computing resources, so industry is going to be incentivized at a structural level to try and shoehorn AI into everything, even if customers don’t want it. That’s obviously not the only reason, but it’s a big contributor as to why there’s so much activity in the space despite the tangible benefits being questionable.

Oh holy shit, AI generated images directly on Whatsapp? This is an XK-class end of the world scenario, for real. The oceans will be boiling in about two weeks because Brazil and India will turn Meta's servers into the sun's corona with the ungodly amount of good morning / good night messages it will have to create.

I'm horrified by this bullshit but I'm also eager to see the horrors beyond my wildest dreams that will be conjured up by Brazilian boomers.

Is this just the ultimate fate of humanity? We just drown ourselves in sludge? Have we strayed so far from the Golden Path and reached a point of irreversible stagnation?

“And so art is everywhere, since artifice is at the very heart of reality. And so art is dead, not only because its critical transcendence is gone, but because reality itself, entirely impregnated by an aesthetic which is inseparable from its own structure, has been confused with its own image. Reality no longer has the time to take on the appearance of reality. It no longer even surpasses fiction: it captures every dream even before it takes on the appearance of a dream.” -Jean Baudrillard

I made a new FB after being off for a few years. Mainly to stay connected with people and use FB Marketplace. I gotta say it seems to be daring people not to use it at this point. One time I counted 12 posts in my feed before I saw a post from someone I actually follow.

Isn't meta the only one making AI open source in an effort to get into the market?

HEY META

Hey Tabitha, how are you?

IMAGINE A CURLY GIRL FLYING A FLY PLZ

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 1 points 1 year ago

it's like really exciting to see some curly hair representation in media, instead of the usual every TV show (or movie) having a scene dedicated to calling a character ugly until she straightens her hair, but FUCK they had to ruin it by making her ride a fucking gross af fly.
