I don't know the guy, but I like him.

As a French, it always seems strange to me seeing a politician making a sermon, but it looks like a normal thing in America.

No, very weird here in the US, although preacher becoming a politician isn't unheard of. It is your job to represent your constituents. Giving a sermon specifically suggests that is your second priority.
