The invisible hand of the market is really just pushing from the back and doesn't steer at all.

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 year ago

Somebody quipped on Imgur along the lines that the invisible hand isn't all that invisible either

Non Aggression Pact, generally used by Libertarians to describe their beliefs of high individual freedoms and low government involvement in their lives. I don’t mess with you, you don’t mess with me is the most basic NAP.

Principle, not pact. It's more unilateral than "pact" would imply.

Sorry for a reddit link, and the subreddit too, but this is the funniest post regarding the NAP I know of: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anarcho_Capitalism/comments/3ucp8y/i_was_beat_up_by_left_anarchists_in_greece/

Wow, like...shitty that a kid was "beat up"....but he's still a fascist....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-aggression_principle

The non-aggression principle (NAP), also called the non-aggression axiom, is the legal or moral rule that states that any person is permitted to do everything with his property except aggression, which is in turn defined as the initiation of forceful action, which is in turn defined as 'the application or threat of' 'physical interference (property breach) or fraud (contract breach)', any of which without consent. The principle is also called the non-initiation of force. The principle incorporates universal enforceability.

The non-aggression principle is a central idea in libertarianism, and minarchism and a fundamental principle in voluntaryism, anarcho-capitalism (legitimate force theory) and international law, namely just war theory

It's a magic spell that you cast which prevents warlords from claiming your property after the government is abolished.

It's funny. Adam Smith used the metaphor of the invisible hand to describe how markets turn Good A in the hands of Firm A into Good C in the hands of Firm E - and in that context, it's really quite an apt metaphor. But it doesn't describe a matter of morality or even of maximizing efficiency - it simply describes a self-directed process. Yet right-libertarians and the like drool all over it as though it was a religious precept.

I suppose to them it is.

Why is Dont Tread On Me being equated to libertarians?

Im gonna start flying a Dont Tread On Me flag alongside a communism flag or something. Fuck the conservatives for stealing that beautiful American icon.

Why is Dont Tread On Me being equated to libertarians?

Same reason the rainbow flag is equated to LGBTQ... They adopted it and made it a symbol for their thing. It happens, don't get too invested in symbols (or slogans).

[–] lugal@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

I agree but let me add that right libertarians stole alot of symbolism from socialist libertarians. There is a quote from the guy who coined anarcho capitalism that he "took away the word anarchism from his political enemies".

I'm not sure if "don't treat on me" and the snake were ever used on the left tho and I don't think so. The animal on the left is the cat

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

I was going to use a much less flattering comparison, but yeah that's exactly it.

[–] CaptainSpaceman@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Actually the LGBTQ one was stolen from the Rainbow Coalition
