I think the better solution here is getting rid of parking lots (but keeping the trees)

I think eliminating all parking lots is extremely unlikely to happen in the near future so in the meantime trees can help mitigate some of their downsides with the right modifications. I support their removal (in fact I’m working on such a project right now) but until they are all removed, which may never happen, this is a good approach to mitigate some of their awful effects.
