If the step up isn't an issue, I'd just cut something along the lines of a hardwood strip/veneer that matches the flooring as much as possible, and covers up the ugly cement under the polished marble. Try and make it look like the polished marble is a layer on top of the hardwood, perhaps?
Honestly, when you're transitioning completely different materials like this, there's no gentle way to do it, IMHO.
