Don't mention how much America fucked with the USSR and was partly responsible for its dissolution.

You know, I don't actually doubt that this is true on some level, given that the entire of nato is working against them it entirely makes sense that russia would be performing widespread attempts at fucking with nato.

With that said.

The author of that report told Al Jazeera that Russia has a scattershot of aims, including causing trouble just to see what will happen.

“Russia has this view of security where anything they do to damage us is relatively speaking good for them because it makes them stronger,” said Keir Giles, a senior consulting fellow at Chatham House. “That in itself is an incentive to do things which are disruptive.”

I know this has long been a belief of liberals and to a degree I do think they're correct in the sense that Russia kinda plays both sides of everything. You can see it between RT and Redfish and other media russia is putting out intended to target specific interest groups that often hold ideologically opposite views.

I do hope that Russia figures out that certain things it should not support because it will lead to fascists winning which will NOT strengthen Russia as they'll be dangerous, less predictable and do what fascists have done throughout history. Unfortunately I don't think they're thinking far enough ahead to realise that. They're following the american formula of just boosting whatever might cause instability in their opponents... That formula consistently caused blowback for america and it will also cause blowback for Russia eventually.

I think this is clearly true, but it's also true of the US and NATO. Like, the US goal in funding and prolonging the war in Ukraine is

sometimes explicitly, in the beginning

simply to damage Russia. It's not as if there's any realistic strategic objective for Ukraine that this US funding will allow them to achieve. It's just that drawing out the war damages Russia.

But also, never trust anyone named Keir.
